Everyone starts somewhere, and from that point, change begins. My starting point was a lower back injury; loss of flexibility drew me to yoga. Through experience, I immediately learned that yoga gave me tools for decreasing my range of pain, while increasing my range of motion. After doing research and finding that yoga went beyond merely stretching, I wanted to learn even more. My quest for knowledge led to my interest in becoming a yoga instructor.

 

As I continue my studies, I find that my favorite style of yoga is Hatha. Its speed and rhythm along with its focus on stance and breath allows body alignment for a sustained amount of time. Sustained body alignment allows time to stretch for flexibility, encouraging muscles to engage for strength, while focusing on the prana of each asana.

 

Overall, I find much value and joy in a well guided vinyasa class that increases heart rate and muscle coordination for rapid transition through many asanas. I also find much value and joy in the deep steady stretch and relaxing tone of a Yin or restorative class. My instruction style is rigorous and challenges one's edge in both stance and breath count. Helping students with body alignment allows them to develop flexibility and strength that maximizes their breath and then their potential, a potential that creates space for them to grow into. Everyone starts somewhere, and from that point, your change begins.
